What is the role of the College Consultant?
Counselors or college advisors must contemplate their own roles and duties and establish a four-year strategy that might significantly impact students’ college experiences. Considering my firsthand encounters with students, particularly those gaining admission to prestigious institutions like MIT, I want to provide them with a candid assessment of their long-term aspirations that may facilitate a constructive dialogue or recommendation.
I believe the college consultant’s responsibilities encompass a comprehensive understanding of the student’s capacity to confront challenges and maintain confidence in their ability to overcome obstacles and pressures. The aspect I enjoy most is the opportunity to hear about students aspirations and assist them in considering various methods to achieve them. It is captivating to observe the numerous paths that students consider and how these paths develop over the course of four years. The most difficult aspect is determining when a student requires additional support, such as when they become ill during the semester and their academic performance is significantly affected. Colleges offer exceptional support; however, some students are unaware that they can seek assistance. My responsibilities include assisting them in understanding how to access assistance, preventing them from becoming frustrated, or seeking alternative experiences to alleviate the burden of college.
An experience that is worth recounting is that of a student of mine, a freshman at MIT, whom I have had the opportunity to teach and mentor throughout high school and into admissions. Due to the proximity of my home and the campus, we meet frequently. She inquired whether she should enroll in a cross-program at Harvard for a course in economics or philosophy. She replied that she was in search of a “new experience” when I asked for an explanation. After several mentoring sessions, I was able to convince her that the sophomore slump she was experiencing was not uncommon; however, she was unsure of how to address it.
I am particularly fond of the opportunity to alleviate a student’s anxiety. Whether it involves assisting them in reframing from their perspective or devising a more effective course of action, those moments are exceedingly gratifying. The most difficult aspect is hearing how many students feel that they are the only ones who are struggling or that they are not doing enough.
College advising is a continuous educational engagement between you and your advisor that fosters critical contemplation over your transition from high school to university experience. It is beyond simple course selection; it is a collaborative alliance rooted in respect, assistance, and the empowerment of learners. Advising seeks to support you in developing a tailored path across the curriculum that aligns with your educational, personal, and professional goals.
